Things I’ve learned as a copywriter so far.
I’ve had the pleasure of working as a copywriter for nearly eight years now. It’s fun. It’s insane. It’s what I think I was meant to do. I’ve learned a few things I think are worth repeating. So whether you’re an eager little beaver just starting out, or a writer much wiser than me, cheers to these little truths.
- Sometimes the visual does all the talking – and that’s okay.
- If a billboard has six words no one will actually die.
- When people smarter than you tell you to read more, you should read more.
- Trust your instincts.
- Make sure everyone knows you’re not the proofreader.
- For the first five years, you’ll be way too insecure to ever think about using a pun.
- If you ever find an AD you really jibe with, you’re very lucky. Buy them things on their birthday and tell them how nice they look every day. A good partner is your best weapon.
- Trust your instincts.
- The first line is the hardest to write. [Rips out hair.] Start in the middle and come back to it.
- No one outside of advertising has a clue what you do. #©
